Equine Physical Therapy: About

Equine Physical Therapy will treat and manage various musculo-skeletal disorders and injuries.  Rehabilitation through physical therapy will help you get your horse back on track after injury or surgery.

Many horses have permanent conditions caused by old injuries or simply by a heavy workload.  These can usually be managed with excellent results using massage therapy combined with mobilization techniques and exercise.

Massage and stretching can improve strength and flexibility.  Massage improves circulation aiding in improving muscle function, recovery and repair.  Regular massage will act to address issues as they arise, before they become problematic.  Massage therapy can by used in conjunction with laser therapy for increased benefits. Continuing therapy improves general health and well-being.

Sports therapy is offered to assist trainers condition their horse over a period of time in order to create the 'fitness peak' at the right time for that important event.  This is important in the prevention of injury and to allow your horse to reach his full potential in your discipline.  Conditioning with sports therapy will also aid in mental preparation, your horse feels good and this is reflected in his performance.

Rehabilitation is a service offered (including post-surgical rehabilitation) and can be undertaken at your site or another arranged site.  Rehabilitation is important as correct management of injuries will reduce the formation of scar tissue, the inhibiting factor in your horse making a full recovery.  Scar tissue is known to be a factor in recurrence of injury.  Rehabilitation involves physical therapy, rest and specific exercise to improve muscle co-ordination.  I will happily work in line with your vet in post-surgery rehabilitation.  Spelling post rehabilitation can be provided where necessary.

Amongst many attributes, laser therapy is excellent for tendon strains and tears.  It is extremely beneficial as treatment can commence immediately due to the cold laser beam which does not heat the area thus can be used where there is existing inflammation.  I also use the laser for acupressure points (acupunture without needles) to complement any of the above treatments.  Combining therapies gives the best results.  Laser therapy can also be used inconjuction with massage to treat trigger points and for an analgesic effect.

Facilities include a large well lit barn with a treatment area, stables, yards, small paddocks, arena and round yard.

Agistment is provided to horses in for treatment only.
